Software, textiles and outsourced human services such as call centers, together with teachers,
nurses and doctors are known Indian exports to the west.
But making a mark in a highly competitive field is Indian fashion that has gathered a global momentum that cannot be
dismissed.
Mumbai is another major centre, responsible for 27% of the country's apparel exports. Large
mills offer cottons, rayon and synthetics, with a balance of men's, women's and children's wear. Buyers say Mumbai is
quite responsive. New Delhi provides possibly the most familiar model to foreign buyers, with annual exports worth
US$2 billion, from a total production valued at less than US$6 billion a year. The capital's big suppliers produce
sophisticated women's and children's wear and a flexible production infrastructure allows for reasonably fast
turnarounds.
Vijay Mathur, director of AEPC, declared that Indian apparel exporters would be very interested to co-operate with Hong
Kong partners for penetrating the Chinese mainland. Mathur claimed he was baffled by the way Chinese mainland factories
could produce apparel at cheaper prices than their Indian competitors.
Still, many Indian sari exporters and those who are into the business of saree wholesale, are looking on the bright side
for 2002 and 2003, believing that market conditions will improve as the world moves to abolish quotas on textiles and
garments in 2005.
In the domestic clothing market, the share of ready-mades is about 70 per cent. But the branded segment in ready-mades is
the fastest growing at 20 per cent per annum. As per a survey conducted by an independent market research firm, the
Indian domestic clothing market has seen 4-5 per cent growth in quantity and value. This rate is much higher than the
growth of economy in real terms and the growth of population.
The Indian influence is beginning to be seen at fashion hotspots around the world. American designers who have
sporadically been inspired by Indian motifs in the past are embracing the eastern look --- saris (traditional Indian
dress worn by women), 'bandgala' (high neck jacket for formal occasions), 'choli' (embroidered blouse), 'lehenga'
(Indian wrap-around), 'kurti' (loose cotton tops) and more.
Indian lehengas, sarees and salwar kameezs are exported to other countries from different parts of India. A large
number of wholesale saree exporters are at Jaipur (Rajasthan), Surat and Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Mumbai,
Bangalore, Cuttack (Orissa), etc. In addition to above places, there are other destinations also which have
wholesale saree store in India.
